How to Survive Shifts — Animal Hospital

A Shift in Animal Hospital Night Shift is one full night at the veterinary clinic. Your lobby loads in, optionally buys supplies, selects Classes, and works until the in-game timer completes and patients are treated or rejected. Shifts number sequentially within a single run — die on Shift 6 and you keep Animal Coins from Shifts 1–5 but lose that night’s payout. This guide maps what unlocks each night so you prepare tools before difficulty spikes, not after a wipe.

What counts as completing a shift

Standard completion requires:

  • Surviving the night timer.
  • Routing admitted patients through treatment or discharge.
  • Keeping team Sanity above zero.
  • Avoiding excessive real patient deaths (three kills often end the run).

Performance bonuses — anomalies rejected at the Shutter, high remaining Sanity, event objectives — convert to Animal Coins for Class unlocks and shop stock. Coins persist across failed runs from nights you already cleared.

Shift 1 — tutorial pacing

Shift 1 introduces movement, the check-in window, basic Room 1 DNA treatment, and the coffee machine. Anomaly tells are generous; the enemy pool is tiny. Dr. Harlow walks the team through core loops.

Goals before Shift 2:

  • Memorize desk layout: window, photo printer, future Shutter position.
  • Finish DNA treatment without abandoning patients mid-scan.
  • Practice sipping coffee after the first jumpscare.
  • Split co-op roles even loosely — one desk, one runner.

You do not need perfect rejection rates yet, but start inspecting every visitor at the window. Getting Started covers first-night fundamentals.

Shift 2 — Shutter and CCTV discipline

Completing Shift 1 unlocks the full intake-control toolkit for Shift 2. Dr. Harlow enables the Shutter — the red reject button beside the window. CCTV monitors become part of mandatory workflow: compare check-in, lobby, medical, and emergency feeds on every arrival alongside the printed photo.

Shift 2 anomaly pool stays small (roughly three active types including Bed Monster setup, Mass of Eyes awareness, and early Skinwalker risk if you admit wrong). Timed emergency rotation has not started — use this band to internalize How to Spot Anomalies without Ambulance chaos.

NPC threads begin: Ron from Accounting, Ratthew, and Barney can appear between tasks. They are not Shutter rejects — see Secrets and Easter Eggs for optional rewards.

Clear condition tips: Maintain Sanity above fifty percent, complete the patient queue, survive roughly eight minutes of night time. Successful clear unlocks Shift 3.

Shift 3 — Taser, shop, and Emergency Wing

Shift 3 is the difficulty inflection point. Three major systems unlock at once:

  1. Supplies Shop (Shopkeeper Nurse) — rotating stock, Coffee, medkits, upgrades between nights.
  2. Free Taser in the Reception Office display case — renewable defense against Skinwalkers and some roaming threats.
  3. Emergency Wing — Room 6 X-ray, Room 7 heart monitor, Room 8 surgery on the left corridor.

Timed emergency events enter the random pool: patient on fire, fainting, Death Ritual, critical vitals, Surgery Monster, monster eating patient. Grab the free Fire Extinguisher beside the shop. Event timers and triage priorities are documented in Events Guide.

Censored Eyes photo-class anomalies debut — black bars on prints should auto-reject. Treatment complexity jumps; read Treatment Rooms before admitting left-wing patients you cannot finish.

Shifts 4–5 — Ambulance pressure

Ambulance events debut Shift 4. Multiple patients arrive in rapid succession, often forcing intake while treatment rooms stay full. This is the most common public-lobby wipe band: the desk admits while runners chase fires, then a mimic slips through.

Shift 4–5 also increases mimic frequency, paperwork checks, and Skinwalker punishment for sloppy CCTV. Assign a dedicated Check-in Lead who does not leave during Ambulance horns. Float player pre-stocks maple syrup once Bed Monster events appear — Ron hints at this item.

Shift 5 completion transitions the run into endless mode.

After Shift 5 — endless nights

There is no hard cap. Shift 6, 7, 10, and beyond continue counting until the lobby wipes or quits voluntarily. Difficulty stacks observably even if Animal Anomaly has not published official numbers:

  • Faster patient arrival rates.
  • More anomaly types per night.
  • Stacked emergencies overlapping Ambulance surges.
  • Heavier Sanity loss from ambient horror and neglected patients.
  • Greater shop dependency — Coffee, camera upgrades, medkits.

Community bands for planning:

Shift rangeFocus
1–2Learn Shutter, photo, CCTV
3Taser, shop, Rooms 6–8, events begin
4–5Ambulance multitasking
6+Endless coordination, optimized Classes

Between-shift shop strategy

Inter-shift screens pause the horror for purchases. Priorities by band:

  • Shift 3–4: Coffee stacks, one Fire Extinguisher if not grabbed free, basic treatment stock.
  • Shift 5–7: Camera upgrades for CCTV clarity, medkits for Skinwalker fights, Speed Cola for Ambulance sprints.
  • Shift 8+: Class synergies — Security for combat, Surgeon for Sanity on heal, Psychologist for coordinated Sanity swings.

Consumables from the previous night usually do not carry over unless a Class passive grants starting gear. Plan buys for the next night’s events, not the shift you just cleared.

Co-op scaling by shift count

  • 2 players: Merge Float into Treatment Lead until Shift 4; then one player must hold desk through Ambulance.
  • 3 players: Drop dedicated Float until Shift 7 when emergencies stack.
  • 4 players: Full role split — Check-in, Treatment, Imaging, Float — ideal for Shift 4+.

Solo players alternate desk and rooms sequentially. Endless Shift 10+ solo is possible but considered a flex run; prioritize How to Manage Sanity and reject anything uncertain.

Common wipe causes by shift

ShiftTypical failure
2Admitting first Skinwalker after skipping CCTV
3Surgery Room 8 abandoned mid-timer
4Ambulance admit while nobody holds Shutter
5+Sanity crash during stacked Death Ritual + fire

After any wipe, identify which layer failed — visual, photo, camera, paperwork, or event triage — and drill that tell next lobby.

Animal Coins and Classes

Coins fund Class unlocks: Doctor, Surgeon, Paramedic, Nurse, Psychologist, Security, Secret Agent, and premium options. No promo codes exist at launch — shifts are the intended grind. High Sanity finishes and clean Shutter records improve payouts.

Endless mindset

Once Shift 5 clears, treat each night as survival infrastructure: coffee timers, camera repairs, Shutter discipline, and event priority tables loaded in muscle memory. Teams that verbalize shift number and upcoming unlocks stay calmer than teams surprised by the first Ambulance horn.

Pair this guide with anomaly detection, Sanity budgeting, and treatment room references so every unlock has a practiced workflow waiting.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for night-shift survival.

Shift 2. Every intake from that night forward should use window, photo, and CCTV cross-checks before admit. Shift 1 teaches basics without full detection pressure.

When can I get the free Taser?

After completing Shift 3, pick up the renewable Taser from the Reception Office display case. Security Class starts with an enhanced X-Taser variant.

When do Ambulance events start?

Shift 4. Shifts 4–5 feature the heaviest Ambulance rotation before endless mode begins after Shift 5.

Is there a maximum shift number?

No hard cap. After Shift 5 the run continues in endless mode until the team wipes or leaves. Difficulty scales with shift count.
